Camp #97 of the Sons of Confederate Veterans was organized and chartered in the spring of 1985 by a small group of local men from the Athens, Georgia area interested in their Confederate heritage. The camp is named for the highest ranking Athenian killed during the war, Brigadier General T. R. R Cobb. Camp meetings are held on the first Thursday of each month, except July and December, at 7:30 pm at the Watkinsville Community Center on VFW Drive. Meetings and Activities:

 

 

 

March 1, 2007: Camp Meeting, 7:30 PM: Presentation by Hank Segars: “John Townsend Trowbridge’s Tour of the South after the War (1867)”.

 

April 5, 2007: Camp Meeting, 7:30 PM: Presentation by John Latty of Gainesville. He will speak on the 11th Cavalry Regiment. The 11th Georgia Cavalry was made up primarily of men from Northeast Georgia and included Lumpkin’s Artillery from Athens. Before becoming a regiment, it was the 30th Georgia Cavalry Battalion and was stationed in Athens early in 1864.

 

May 3, 2007: Camp Meeting, 7:30 PM: Presentation by Ben Wynne on “Mississippi and the War”.

 

June 7, 2007: Camp Meeting, 7:30 PM: Presentation by Tim Drake on “A Gathering Storm/Georgia and South Carolina”.

July 14, 2007: A “Ramble” with Bill Moffat. The group will gather in the parking lot behind the courthouse in Watkinsville at 9 am, then head to Greene and Putnam Counties. Wives are invited. Bring a picnic lunch.

August 2, 2007: Camp Meeting, 7:30 PM: A presentation by Rev. Jim Cabaniss of the Bethesda United Methodist Church in Lawrenceville on “Christianity and the Common Soldier of the Confederacy”.

 

September 6, 2007: Camp Meeting, 7:30 PM: A presentation by Mary Long on “Lincoln, a Southern View”.

 

October 4, 2007: Camp Meeting, 7:30 PM: A presentation by camp member Bill Cawthon on “A Worldwide Perspective on Slavery”.

 

November 1, 2007: Camp Meeting, 7:30 PM: Rev. Jim Cabaniss of Lawrenceville will speak on “Christianiy and the Common Confederate Soldier”.

 

December 6, 2007: Camp Christmas party, 6:00 PM: Watkinsville Community Center; catered by Chonell’s; special entertainment provided. Spouses welcome.

 

 

January 3, 2008: Camp Meeting, 7:30 PM: Dr. David Wiggins will present a program on Confederate images. His new book “Georgia’s Confederate Sons – Vol. 1” is a compilation of images of approximately 300 Georgia Confederate soldiers, most never before published. Each image has a mini-biography of the subject, giving the pertinent details of his life and Confederate service. Cobb Camp members Goodlow Erwin, Bucky Redwine, and George Smith loaned several of these images. Dr. Wiggins will have copies of all of his books for sale at the meeting.

 

February 7, 2008: Camp Meeting, 7:30 PM: Muriel Jolsyn will present a program.

 

March 6, 2008: Camp Meeting, 7:30 PM: Presentation By Joe Warnke of Dawsonville. He will speak on The Constitutionality of Secession. Warnke is Adjutant to the SCV Army of Tennessee and a member of the Col. Hiram Parks Bell Camp 1642 in Cumming, GA.

 

April 3, 2008: Camp Meeting, 7:30 PM: John Latty will present a program on his new book the 11th Calvary. Books for sale.
